Do You Think?

So do you think you need to play all five - six CoD's to understand the storyline/guidelines of it, I don't think you personally do as you can pretty much guess what is going to happen in the one before, your opinions?

No.....Call of Duty: Big Red One has no relation to Modern Warfare 2 ;)

But, Yeah I get your point. Playing CoD:4 AFTER completing Modern Warfare 2 would mess with your head..

This should help:
Call of Duty 1, 2, and 3 are all separate World War II first person shooting games. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is based on, well, modern warfare. Call of Duty 5: World at War is the newer World War II game with an extremely fun bonus after you finish the campaign ;) And Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2 is a continuation of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
I suggest you get Call of Duty 5 to get how CoD is, then get 4 and if you like it, 6. 6 is awesome.

Like DAK has mentioned already, the CoD series in itself ddoes not have a connection.
The only follow up ever was MW2, as a sequel to CoD:4!
CoD:4 was such a big hit, that they had no choice but to give us a Part2 (due to public demand) Iinfinity Ward, in a sense disctanced itself from the Call of Duty franchise a bit, and brought out ModernWarfare 2 (which does not officially have the Call of Duty name tag).

I think if you would like to play CoD, then I would suggest purchasing CoD:4 as well as MW2 and I can guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.

The games are being brought out by different studios, and they take it in turns, so that is why some titles bight be confusing.
General rule is thought.... Infinity Ward make the better games (in my opinion) and they made CoD:2, CoD:4 and MW2(CoD:6).

Treyarch are the studios who made CoD:Original, CoD:3, CoD:5 (World at War) and will be bringing out CoD:7 (Vietnam) some time in November this year.

I've seen a few people say that now but it clearly says Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on both the case and disk, haha. Where are people getting that from?!

...and Infinity Ward did good with CoD2 and CoD4 but they screwed up bigtime with MW2. I couldn't be happier that they've been fired and a new company are developing MW3.
